About Kirsty

Kirsty has been a key member of the Burgess Mee team since 2013 and partner since 2021. Clients have praised Kirsty’s calm, supportive and robust approach. She advises clients on all issues arising from the breakdown of a marriage or a cohabiting relationship. She works with clients to find pragmatic solutions to issues concerning finances and children. A further area of interest is the intersection of capacity with family law. Kirsty has acted for and against individuals who have impaired decision-making abilities as a result of mental health difficulties or serious illness.

A significant proportion of Kirsty’s caseload involves engaging in out of court negotiations, going through a voluntary financial disclosure processes or private court hearings. Kirsty also advises clients who attend mediation, providing advice and support in the background, or, if required, attending hybrid mediation or round table meetings to ensure that clients are fairly and evenly represented during the mediation process.

When required Kirsty will carefully guide clients through the private arbitration or court process providing robust advice.

Kirsty is also a Resolution trained mediator and carries out mediation sessions in person and online.

As well as taking part in the Burgess Mee trauma training, Kirsty has undertaken levels 2 and 3 of the CPCAB Counselling Studies certificates which has given her a greater ability to assist clients though the emotional fallout of separation. She is an active member of Resolution and sits on the Cohabitation Committee.  She is a member of the Family Law Agreements Group, a group of family law professionals who prepare and advise on pre and post nuptial agreements sensitively and proportionately.

Kirsty studied law at Edinburgh University before completing her Diploma in Legal Practice at Aberdeen University. She trained at the leading Scottish firm of Brodies in Edinburgh, qualifying in June 2010. Kirsty is a qualified solicitor in Scotland and England and Wales. After moving to London upon qualification, Kirsty joined the Family Department at Mishcon de Reya where she spent two years practicing exclusively in family law. Due to her Scottish connections, Kirsty's caseload often involves advising on Anglo-Scottish cross border issues. Kirsty is also a member of the Family Law Association in Scotland and the Society of Scottish Lawyers in London.

As well as Edinburgh and London, Kirsty also has experience of working in the field of family law in the USA and France. She spent three months working at the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children in Alexandria, VA, USA and completed a summer internship with Veronique Chauveau and Alexandre Boiche in Paris, France.
